Extensive Updates on a Sedona Home
Our team removed the old deck and rebuilt the new deck with an expanded footprint, Trex Spiced Rum decking, an Alumawood lattice pergola, custom welded railing, and several structural improvements. While the finished project may appear simple, it required extensive planning, engineering, masonry work, electrical installation, and custom craftsmanship to bring the homeowners' vision to life.
Replacing an Old Deck with a Custom Deck
The homeowners' existing deck had become outdated and no longer provided the space they needed for relaxing and entertaining. Rather than investing in repairs, they chose a complete deck replacement that would allow them to maximize their outdoor living area and create a more enjoyable backyard experience.
A Better Deck Footprint for Better Outdoor Entertaining
The expanded footprint provides more room for seating, gathering, and enjoying Sedona's beautiful weather. What was once a limited outdoor area is now a comfortable extension of the home that encourages outdoor living year-round.
Structural Engineering and CMU Retaining Walls
Although the deck itself is relatively compact, this project involved a surprising amount of complexity. Unlike many deck projects, this custom deck rebuild required drafting and structural engineering before construction could begin. Detailed planning and engineering helped ensure the deck would perform properly for years to come. This behind-the-scenes work laid the foundation for a successful project and demonstrates the level of care that went into every stage of construction.
One of the most unique aspects of the project was the construction of concrete-filled CMU retaining walls and planter walls. These structural features provide support for the expanded deck while enhancing the overall appearance of the outdoor living space. After installation, the walls were stuccoed and painted to complement the home's exterior. We also repurposed boards from the original deck to create custom deck skirting, reducing waste while adding a custom finishing touch.

The homeowners selected Trex Spiced Rum decking for its attractive appearance, durability, and low-maintenance performance. Unlike traditional wood decking, Trex composite decking resists fading, staining, and weather-related wear while maintaining its beauty for years to come.
To improve comfort and usability, we installed an Alumawood lattice pergola that provides shade while allowing natural light and airflow to pass through. The pergola creates a more enjoyable outdoor environment without sacrificing the open feel of the deck.
A custom welded railing adds both safety and style, while two outdoor ceiling fans help keep the space comfortable during Arizona's warmer months. Together, these features transformed an outdated deck into a functional and inviting outdoor living area.
